Eating in Penang - Restaurant Line Clear Nasi Kandar, Penang Road
"Nasi kandar", a popular rice dish of Indian-Muslim origin, served with a mind-boggling array of curries & side-dishes, is a must-have for any foodie to Penang.
Line Clear Nasi Kandar is incongruously located in a narrow alleyway, near the junction of Penang Road & Chulia Street in downtown Georgetown. It's been serving nasi kandar at the same spot for nearly 70 years now. The place stays open 24 hours.
Standing near the large cauldrons of bubbling curries, one cannot help but be seduced by the delicious aromas of the various curries being cooked: mutton khurma, chicken curry, giant fish-heads curry, etc.

The bar has a fabulous view of the waterfront & the sunset was magical.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol
This tiny 70-year-old dessert stall is a Penang icon of sorts. Started just after WWII, it's famous for ONE item: chendol, a delicious Malaysian dessert of shaved ice with squiggly little green "chendol" noodles, red beans, coconut milk & brown sugar syrup. Thousands of Malaysian establishments all over the world offer this dessert - but this little stall must be one of the best in the world.

Lebuh Keng Kwee, Penang

Madras New Woodlands Restaurant
Madras New Woodlands Restaurant is a pure vegetarian Indian food restaurant in Penang. The food here is excellent. Woodlands Special Thali is a must to try. The menu says that it comes with "Sweet, Chappathi, Dhall, Rice, Sambar, Rasam, 3 Vege, Spicy Spl Kulambu, Curd, Chilly Papard". But be forewarned that this dish is very filling.
Other dishes that is equally delicious are the Vegetable Briyani, Vege Pulao, Mushroom Pulao, Palak Panner (Home made cheese smothered in freshly ground spinach), Aloo Palak (cube of potato in freshly ground spinach).

Eng Loh Coffee Shop, Church Street Penang
Eng Loh Coffee Shop in the heart of Georgetown. It is located at the end of Church Street, diagonally across the Pinang Peranakan Mansion and is exceptionally crowded during lunch hour.
Besides serving good coffee, the coffee shop operator also serves choices of Western breakfast of sausages and egg together with toast bread. There are ten over choices of bread and my favorite is the Roti Taiwan.

Kopi Cine, In-House Cafe of Straits Collection
Kopi Cine is a casual neighborhood cafe that has a mixed clientele. The cafe with its wooden counter and high chairs has several tables leaning against the wall. The classic old counter looked extremely enticing, with a glass counter filled with cakes. The interior furnished with ceiling fans and decorated with colorful photos and art pieces, provides a relaxing venue to enjoy good food and wine.
They have an interesting menu with separate sections for breakfast, lunch and tapas-style dinners together with an interesting wine menu.

A fun simple Café with an all day & night menu. The concept is to blend the old style Penang coffees with the latest Italian styles. Asian movies will be shown late evening.
